Rebecca's review — Volkswagen Tiguan R-line Phev hybrid (2022–2024)

Overview
The family SUV that makes petrol feel wasteful
If you want a proper family SUV that lets you do the school run and the commute mostly on electricity, and still feels like a genuinely premium car when you get there, the Tiguan R-Line plug-in hybrid is a very strong used buy right now. It hits a sweet spot between practical size, strong refinement, and real-world running costs that most rivals simply cannot match.
Outside
R-Line body kit. Looks factory-fresh at any age.
The R-Line trim adds a proper sports body kit, a sharper front bumper, and lower sills that give the Tiguan a stance it frankly needed. It looks taut and purposeful without being aggressive. The panel gaps are tight, the chrome detailing is restrained, and this is just one of those shapes that has not dated at all. Dark colours in particular look absolutely superb on it.
Inside
Sits like a much more expensive car than this
Step inside and the quality hits you immediately. Soft-touch surfaces, solid switchgear, supportive sports seats with decent bolstering, and a genuinely airy greenhouse that makes every journey feel relaxed. The back seat has proper legroom for adults, not just children, and the boot, even with the hybrid battery underneath, remains one of the most usable in the class. It feels expensive in the best possible way.
Tech
The driver aids actually work. All of them.
The digital cockpit gives you clear, configurable instruments, and the infotainment system handles navigation, media, and climate without making you fight it. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are genuinely useful every single day. The adaptive cruise holds its lane, reads speed signs, and makes motorway driving noticeably less tiring. Travel Assist in particular is one of the better semi-autonomous systems you will find at this price point in the used market.
Driving
Smooth enough to make diesel feel agricultural
The 1.4-litre petrol and electric motor together produce a combined output that makes the Tiguan feel brisk and effortless. The DSG gearbox is one of the best dual-clutch units in the business, shifting cleanly and almost imperceptibly. Ride comfort is well-judged for a family SUV, firm enough to feel composed but never harsh. On the motorway it is exceptionally refined, and in electric mode around town it is brilliantly hushed.
Running
Charge it nightly and you may forget fuel exists
If you can charge at home, the day-to-day running costs are genuinely low. Short commutes can go entirely on electricity for weeks at a time, and longer runs on the combined cycle return respectable economy. Insurance groups are reasonable for the class, Volkswagen servicing is widely available and predictable, and parts availability across the network is excellent. Company car drivers also benefit from a low benefit-in-kind rate, which makes this an even more compelling proposition.
Verdict
Check the charge port, the 12-volt battery, and the DSG service histor
Worth a quick check on those three things before you sign anything, but beyond that this is a very easy recommendation. You get a genuinely premium SUV, real electric range for daily use, a cabin that punches well above the money you are spending, and a badge the used market has not yet caught up with properly. If you want the best all-round family SUV in this bracket, the Tiguan R-Line hybrid is the one to have.
