Rebecca's review — Skoda Kodiaq Se L diesel (2016–2018)
Overview
Seven seats, diesel pulling power, half the price
The Skoda Kodiaq SE L diesel is one of those cars that makes an awful lot of sense the longer you think about it. You get a proper seven-seat SUV built on Volkswagen Group underpinnings, with a generous equipment level that was positioned well above the base trim. It suits families, dog owners, anyone doing long motorway miles, and people who want a lot of car without a lot of fuss.
Outside
Still looks new. It is pushing ten years old.
Skoda gave the Kodiaq clean, confident lines that have not dated at all. The SE L usually came on larger alloys and they fill the arches nicely, giving it a planted, purposeful stance. The chrome detailing is restrained rather than flashy. Darker colours like deep blue and graphite grey suit it particularly well, and the overall impression is of something considered and quietly premium.
Inside
The boot swallows a family holiday. Twice.
Inside is where the Kodiaq genuinely earns its money. SE L specification brought leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a finish that feels solid and well-thought-out rather than just ticked off a list. The boot with the third row folded is enormous, and even with all seven seats in use there is usable space behind row three. Front and second-row passengers have ample head and legroom throughout.
Tech
The sat nav still works better than your phone mount
The SE L came with a Columbus infotainment system featuring a large touchscreen, built-in navigation, and DAB radio. Wireless Apple CarPlay was not factory-fitted but wired connectivity was standard, and it responds quickly. The driver assistance package brought adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, which make motorway journeys genuinely relaxing. The ambient lighting and electrically adjustable front seats round out a tech offering that holds up well even now.
Driving
That diesel pulls from nothing. You never need more.
The two-litre diesel in this generation is the real star. It delivers strong low-down torque that makes it feel effortless whether you are pulling out of a junction or overtaking on a dual carriageway. The seven-speed DSG gearbox is smooth and well-matched to the engine character. Ride comfort on the standard suspension is accomplished, the steering is light enough for town without feeling vague on faster roads, and refinement at a cruise is genuinely impressive.
Running
Real-world diesel economy that actually surprises people
Running a diesel Kodiaq is one of its quiet advantages. On a mixed run with a light right foot you will see very respectable fuel returns for a car this size, and motorway trips are where it really shines. Insurance groups are reasonable for a seven-seat SUV, and Skoda's service network is wide and sensibly priced. Parts are shared across the Volkswagen Group so availability is excellent and independent specialists know the platform well.
Verdict
Check the DSG service history and the DPF condition first
Do check the gearbox service record and confirm the DPF has had a healthy life before you sign anything. Beyond that, the Kodiaq SE L diesel is a strong used buy in almost any situation. You get Volkswagen Group build quality, a genuinely practical seven-seat body, and an equipment level that still reads well against new cars costing considerably more. If you want a lot of family car and very little drama, this is the one to have.
