Rebecca's review — SEAT Ateca Actec Fr petrol (2022–2024)
Overview
The Ateca FR is the sweet spot nobody talks about
The SEAT Ateca FR petrol sits in a brilliant place in the used market. You get a proper family SUV with genuine sporty intent, built on Volkswagen Group bones, but at a price that leaves money in your pocket. It suits drivers who want something that looks purposeful on the school run and still puts a grin on their face at the weekend. This is a very good car.
Outside
Seven years of fashion and the FR still wins.
SEAT gave the Ateca FR a sharper, more aggressive face than the standard car, and it has aged remarkably well. The wide lower bumper, gloss black details, and red FR badging all still read as premium. The alloys are a proper size and they fill the arches correctly. In darker colours especially, this thing has real presence on the road without being showy about it.
Inside
The back seat fits three adults. Actually fits them.
Climb inside and the cabin feels genuinely well put together. Soft-touch materials where your hands land, sensible layout, and a driving position that feels immediately right. The rear is generous for a compact SUV, and the boot is a useful, square shape that swallows pushchairs, dog crates, and airport luggage without complaint. The FR seats grip you nicely without being uncomfortable on long journeys.
Tech
Wireless CarPlay came before most rivals offered it.
The infotainment is a proper step up from earlier Atecas. You get a clear, responsive touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring, voice control, and over-the-air style updates. The driver assistance package on the FR includes adaptive cruise with lane keeping, which is genuinely relaxing on a long motorway run. Digital dials and a colour head-up display make the whole thing feel more expensive than the asking price suggests.
Driving
The 1.5 TSI pulls harder than the numbers suggest.
The 1.5-litre turbo petrol is a sweet unit. It has enough torque low down to feel effortless in town, and the seven-speed DSG changes gear smoothly and quickly when you ask it to. Motorway refinement is impressive, and the FR's firmer suspension tune keeps body roll well in check without making urban driving a chore. Point it at a B-road and you realise SEAT actually meant the sporting badge.
Running
Real-world economy sits around 38 to 42 miles per gallon.
The 1.5 TSI uses cylinder deactivation on a light throttle, so on a run you will see genuinely respectable figures. Insurance sits in a reasonable group for the class, and the VW Group service network means parts availability is excellent and independent specialists know these engines well. Reliability on this generation has been solid. Ownership is straightforward and largely fuss-free, which is exactly what you want from a family car.
Verdict
Check the DSG service history and the tyre wear.
Give the DSG service stamps a quick look and check the front tyres for even wear before you sign anything. Beyond that, the Ateca FR petrol is a genuinely compelling used buy. It drives with more enthusiasm than the class average, the cabin holds up well, running costs are manageable, and it looks sharp without dating itself. If you want a family SUV that you will actually enjoy driving, this is the one.
