Rebecca's review — Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 Amg petrol (2019–2021)

Overview
Premium German SUV. Used prices finally make sense.
The GLA 200 AMG Line is one of those cars that punches well above its price in the used market. You get a proper Mercedes badge, a genuinely premium feel, and the raised driving position that so many people want. It suits city dwellers, commuters, young families, and anyone who wants something that feels special every single morning without paying new-car money for it.
Outside
Still looks new. It is seven years old.
The AMG Line bodykit gives this GLA a sharpness the standard car never quite had — front splitter, side sills, a more purposeful rear end. The proportions have aged brilliantly. It still looks contemporary parked next to cars half a decade newer. The 18-inch AMG alloys fill the arches properly, and Mercedes offered some genuinely elegant paint options across this generation.
Inside
You sit in here and forget what you paid.
Mercedes put real money into this cabin. Soft-touch surfaces where your hands actually land, good seat comfort on long journeys, and a driving position that feels natural within minutes. Rear passengers have reasonable legroom for the class, and the boot is a practical shape with no awkward loading lip. The AMG Line trim adds sports seats that hold you nicely without feeling punishing.
Tech
Apple CarPlay comes as standard. It should not surprise you.
The infotainment system is responsive and logically laid out, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both present and genuinely easy to use. Sat-nav, DAB, Bluetooth — all there. The driver assistance package on AMG Line spec typically includes active lane keeping and autonomous emergency braking, and unlike some systems of this era, they calibrate sensibly rather than fighting you constantly.
Driving
Seven-speed gearbox and it never catches you out.
The 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol is a willing, smooth engine that delivers 163 brake horsepower — enough to feel lively in town and comfortable at motorway speeds. The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox shifts cleanly, and the steering has a pleasing weight to it without feeling artificial. Refinement is genuinely impressive. Wind and road noise are well suppressed, and the ride absorbs urban imperfections without drama.
Running
Real-world fuel figures you can actually live with.
The 200 petrol sits in an accessible insurance group, and the 1.3-litre engine returns respectable economy for a small SUV — mid-thirties to low forties miles per gallon in everyday use is realistic. Mercedes servicing has become more competitively priced in recent years, and independent specialists cover this generation well. Parts supply is strong, and this is one of the more reliable configurations in the GLA range.
Verdict
Check the gearbox service history and the tyre wear.
Before you buy, quickly confirm the dual-clutch gearbox has been serviced and check for uneven tyre wear front and rear. That is genuinely all. Because what you are getting here is a Mercedes that looks the part, drives beautifully, costs a reasonable amount to run, and has aged far better than most of its rivals. If you want a premium compact SUV without the new-car sting, this is the one.
