Rebecca's review — Mercedes-Benz A-Class A 180 petrol (2022–2024)

Overview
Premium German metal for less than you think
The A-Class A 180 is Mercedes-Benz doing something genuinely clever — putting you in a proper premium car without asking a premium price on the used market. It suits city commuters, young professionals, and anyone who wants their daily drive to feel special every single morning. This generation sharpened everything that made the A-Class already popular, and used values reflect that without being painful.
Outside
Seven years on and it still turns heads
Mercedes really did get the shape right here. The low roofline, the wide haunches, and that sharp front end with the bold grille give it a presence that still reads as current and confident. Dark colours in particular wear brilliantly over time, and the alloy wheel designs available on this generation are among the nicest in the class. It photographs beautifully and it looks even better in person.
Inside
You feel rich the moment you close the door
Slide into the driver's seat and the quality hits you immediately — soft-touch surfaces, solid switchgear, and that wide twin-screen dashboard that still looks properly upmarket. The seats are supportive and comfortable on long journeys, and rear legroom is better than the roofline suggests. The boot is a decent size for a car this length, and the whole cabin feels like something a tier above what you paid.
Tech
This cabin makes newer rivals look behind
The MBUX infotainment system is one of the best reasons to choose this car. The voice control is genuinely useful, the navigation is sharp and quick, and wireless smartphone mirroring works exactly as it should. Driver aids including lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, and adaptive cruise make longer motorway journeys far less tiring. The whole system is intuitive once you spend an afternoon with it.
Driving
Effortless. That's the only word for it.
The 1.3-litre petrol is a willing, smooth little engine that pairs beautifully with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Around town it feels lively and easy to place, and on a motorway it settles into a quiet, relaxed cruise. The ride quality is comfortable without being wallowy, and the steering has enough weight to make you feel connected. For the commute and the weekend drive, it genuinely delivers.
Running
Real-world economy that makes sense every week
The A 180 petrol returns solid fuel economy in everyday use, and the petrol engine keeps insurance groups accessible compared to the AMG-line hot versions. Mercedes servicing has become more straightforward and competitively priced than its reputation suggests, with a good network of independent specialists for this generation too. Parts availability is strong, and the car's reliability record for this engine and gearbox is reassuringly solid.
Verdict
Check the service history and the MBUX software version
Have a quick look at the service history, confirm the MBUX software has been updated, and check the dual-clutch gearbox behaves smoothly from cold — done. Beyond that, what you are getting is a properly premium, beautifully finished, genuinely enjoyable car at a price that makes real sense in 2026. If you want to feel good every single time you unlock the door, the A 180 is the one to have.
