Rebecca's review — Mercedes-Benz A-Class A 220 petrol (2019–2021)

Overview
Premium German metal. Not premium German money.
The A 220 petrol is the one to have in this generation. You get a proper turbocharged four-cylinder, enough performance to feel genuinely quick, and a cabin that punches well above what you would expect at used-car money. It suits young professionals, small families, and anyone who wants a Mercedes badge without the running costs of something bigger. Smart choice, honestly.
Outside
Seven years on. Still stops people in car parks.
Mercedes got the styling exactly right with this generation. The low roofline, the sharp shoulder line, the wide front end — it all still looks current. AMG Line trim adds a subtle body kit and larger alloys that fill the arches beautifully. Paint quality is excellent, and the wheel designs in particular have aged far better than most of the competition from the same period.
Inside
Sits like a luxury car. Costs like a family hatch.
Step inside and the quality hits you immediately. Soft-touch materials where your hands land, a low driving position that feels genuinely sporting, and seats with real support on longer runs. Rear space is fine for two adults, perfectly comfortable for children. The boot is a proper usable shape with a flat floor, and the overall ambience is closer to a C-Class than anything in this class deserves to be.
Tech
Two screens, widescreen style, standard fit.
The MBUX infotainment system is genuinely impressive even by today's standards. The dual widescreen display looks spectacular, voice control actually works, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported. Active lane keeping, radar cruise control, and blind spot monitoring came as standard or near-standard on most specs. These are features you use every single day, and they are all here.
Driving
Two hundred horsepower in a small hatchback. Yes please.
The two-litre turbo produces around two hundred horsepower and pulls cleanly from low revs right through to the top of the dial. The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is smooth in normal driving and snappy when you want it to be. Refinement at motorway speeds is genuinely impressive for the class. The ride on the standard suspension is well-judged — composed without being harsh, and always feeling planted and secure.
Running
Mid-thirties to the gallon from a two-litre turbo.
Real-world fuel consumption sits comfortably in the mid-thirties of miles per gallon, which for this much performance is a genuine result. Insurance groups are reasonable for the power on offer. Mercedes uses a flexible servicing system, so intervals can stretch to two years or twelve thousand miles depending on use, which keeps annual costs down. Parts availability is excellent, and independent specialists are plentiful and well-priced.
Verdict
Check the DSG service history and the MBUX software version.
Just check the gearbox service history and confirm the infotainment software has been updated — one sentence, done. Beyond that, the A 220 is a seriously accomplished used buy. You get genuine Mercedes quality, a strong and efficient engine, technology that still leads its class, and looks that have not aged a day. If you want the best all-round used premium hatch under this money, this is the one.
