Rebecca's review — Jaguar XE R-dynamic Black diesel (2019–2021)

Overview
A proper Jaguar for less than you think
The XE R-Dynamic Black is Jaguar doing what it does best — taking on the Germans on their own turf and winning on style points. This is a compact executive diesel that gives you real badge prestige, a genuinely sporty character, and a cabin that punches well above the price you will pay for one used in 2026. It suits commuters, keen drivers, and anyone tired of the ordinary.
Outside
Seven years old and it still stops people
The XE always had one of the best silhouettes in the class, and the R-Dynamic Black trim sharpens it right up. You get gloss black detailing on the grille, the window surrounds, and the mirrors, and the sportier bumpers give the car a lower, more purposeful stance. The wheels are a strong design that still looks current, and Jaguar's proportions have aged remarkably well.
Inside
Sits better than cars costing twice as much
Climb in and the quality of materials immediately makes sense of the Jaguar name. The seats are well shaped and supportive, the leather is soft, and the driving position drops low in that classic sports saloon way. Rear space is adequate for adults on longer runs, and the boot is a genuinely practical size for a car this length. It feels special every single time you get in.
Tech
You wanted Apple CarPlay. It is already there.
The Touch Pro infotainment system on these cars is quick and logically laid out, with a clean central screen that handles navigation, media, and phone mirroring without a fight. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both present. You also get adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency braking as standard on this trim, which makes motorway journeys noticeably less tiring day to day.
Driving
Diesel engines this good should not be allowed
The two-litre diesel is a refined and flexible unit with strong mid-range torque that makes it feel effortless at motorway speeds. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is smooth in normal driving and responds sharply when you want it to. Ride quality on the adaptive suspension is composed without feeling soft, and the steering has an accuracy and weight that reminds you this car was engineered to be driven, not just transported in.
Running
Real-world fuel returns that make a difference
The diesel engine will return well over forty miles to the gallon on a mixed run, which adds up significantly over a year of ownership. Insurance groupings are reasonable for the class, and Jaguar's servicing network is solid across the country, with independent specialists now very well versed in this generation. Fixed-price servicing plans are still available through Jaguar retailers, which takes the unpredictability out of the running costs entirely.
Verdict
Check the service history and the infotainment version
Worth a quick check before you buy: confirm the full service history is present, and make sure the software on the infotainment has been kept up to date. Beyond that, this is a straightforward recommendation. The XE R-Dynamic Black gives you genuine Jaguar character, a driver-focused chassis, and a premium interior at a used price that makes the German alternatives look overpriced. If you want a proper driver's saloon that rewards you every day, this is the one.
