Rebecca's review — Ford Kuga St-line X hybrid (2022–2024)

Overview
The sweet spot nobody talks about
The Ford Kuga ST-Line X hybrid sits right in the middle of the market where sensible meets genuinely desirable. It is roomy enough for a proper family, efficient enough to keep running costs down, and just good-looking enough that you actually want to be seen in it. If you do a mix of town, commute, and the occasional long run, this car was designed with you specifically in mind.
Outside
It still turns heads. That surprises people.
Ford got the proportions right on this generation. The ST-Line X trim adds a sportier lower bumper, gloss black details, and a set of large alloys that fill the arches properly. The roofline slopes just enough to look sleek without killing rear headroom. Colours like Desert Island Blue and Lucid Red have aged brilliantly, and the overall shape still feels fresh rather than dated.
Inside
You sit in it and think: this cost more than it did
The ST-Line X gets a genuinely upmarket interior for this class. Soft-touch surfaces on the dash, heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof that transforms the cabin on a bright day. Rear legroom is generous, and three adults sit across the back in real comfort. The boot is a proper 475 litres with the hybrid system underneath, so you lose nothing practical to the battery.
Tech
The screen is actually easy to use. Rare.
The 13.2-inch portrait touchscreen fitted to this generation is one of Ford's best efforts — logical menus, quick responses, and physical shortcut buttons below it so you are not fishing through sub-menus on the move. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard. You also get a head-up display, adaptive cruise control with lane centring, and a 360-degree parking camera that makes tight spaces stress-free.
Driving
Petrol assist makes it feel quicker than the numbers say
The 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine works with the electric motor seamlessly, and around town the transitions are so smooth you barely notice the combustion engine joining in. Responses feel unhurried but never sluggish. On the motorway it settles into a relaxed, refined cruise with very little wind or road noise. The suspension is tuned for comfort without being floaty, so it handles a twisty B-road without embarrassing itself.
Running
Real-world fuel figures that match the brochure. Almost.
In mixed real-world driving you can expect somewhere around 40 to 47 miles per gallon, and in town that climbs higher because the electric motor takes a lot of the work. Insurance sits in a comfortable group for this size and power output. Ford's service network is extensive, fixed-price servicing plans are widely available, and parts are affordable. Reliability for this hybrid system has been solid, with no widespread issues across the generation.
Verdict
Check the SYNC software version and service history
Give the infotainment software version and the full service history a quick look before you hand over any money. Beyond that, this is a straightforward recommendation. You get a roomy, refined, good-looking family SUV with running costs that make real sense in daily life. It drives better than it needs to, the cabin feels more expensive than the price suggests, and the hybrid system genuinely earns its keep. If this is your shortlist, put it at the top.
