Rebecca's review — BMW X2 Xdrive 20d diesel (2019–2021)

Overview
A proper BMW for less than you'd expect
The X2 xDrive 20d sits in a sweet spot that is genuinely hard to find in the used market. You get BMW build quality, all-wheel drive, a diesel engine that is effortless on long runs, and a shape that reads as sporty rather than sensible. It appeals to people who want something with a bit of character but still need it to work hard every single day.
Outside
Still looks new. It's seven years old.
BMW got the proportions right from the start. The coupe roofline gives it a genuinely athletic stance, the C-pillar graphic ages brilliantly, and the kidney grilles look confident without tipping into aggression. The wheel arches are wide and filled properly. Find it in a dark metallic — Mineral Grey or Sophisto Grey — and it looks like it rolled out of a showroom yesterday.
Inside
You'll forget this isn't a brand new car
Sit inside and the quality is immediately obvious. The materials are soft where your hands land, the driving position is spot on, and the seat bolstering holds you without clamping you. Rear headroom is better than you expect given that roofline. The boot is a good practical size for a car this shape, and the loading lip is low enough to be genuinely useful day to day.
Tech
iDrive at this age is still class-leading
The iDrive system in this generation is fast, logical, and the rotary controller means you are never poking at a screen while moving. Wireless Apple CarPlay arrives on most examples, the digital dials are crisp and configurable, and the parking sensors plus reversing camera are genuinely helpful in tight urban spots. Lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking come as standard, which matters.
Driving
Two-litre diesel that never feels like hard work
The 190 brake horsepower diesel pulls cleanly from low revs and the eight-speed automatic gearbox is one of the better ones fitted to any car at this price point. On a motorway it is refined and settled. Through corners it feels lighter and keener than the SUV body suggests. The xDrive all-wheel drive system distributes power instinctively, and in the wet it gives you real confidence without any fuss.
Running
Real-world fuel figures that actually impress
This engine regularly returns over 45 miles per gallon on a mixed run, which for an all-wheel drive car of this size is genuinely good. Insurance groups are reasonable for the class. BMW's used approved servicing network is well-organised, parts availability is strong, and fixed-price service menus keep costs predictable. Diesel particulate filters on well-maintained examples last a long time when the car is used properly.
Verdict
Check the DPF history and the service stamps
Before you buy, quickly confirm the service history is stamped up and ask about DPF regeneration cycles if it has lived a short-journey life. That is genuinely all. Because otherwise this is a beautifully built, handsome, capable car that rewards you every time you drive it. If you want something with real BMW character, all-wheel drive confidence, and running costs that do not punish you, the X2 xDrive 20d is the one to have.
