Rebecca's review — BMW X1 Xdrive 25e hybrid (2022–2024)

Overview
The hybrid SUV that actually makes sense used
The X1 xDrive25e is a genuinely clever used buy. You get a proper BMW, a usable electric range for the daily commute, and a full petrol engine for everything else. It sits in that sweet spot where the original owner has taken the depreciation hit and you walk away with a near-premium SUV for a very sensible outlay. Families love it. Commuters love it even more.
Outside
Bolder than you remember. Stronger than it looks.
BMW got the proportions right here. The squared-off arches give it a planted, confident stance without looking aggressive, and the kidney grille is tasteful by modern BMW standards. The roofline flows well, the surfacing is clean, and it photographs beautifully in darker colours. A few years on, it still looks current. That is rarer than you might think in this class.
Inside
This cabin punches well above its price now.
Sit inside and the quality is immediately apparent. Soft-touch materials land in the right places, the driving position is excellent, and the seat support on longer runs is genuinely good. Rear passengers have real headroom and legroom, which is not a given in a compact SUV. The boot is a touch smaller than a standard X1 thanks to the battery, but it remains entirely practical for family life.
Tech
The screen setup felt futuristic. It still does.
The iDrive system is one of the better setups in this segment and it has aged well. The curved display clusters the instruments and infotainment together in a way that feels considered rather than gimmicky. Wireless Apple CarPlay comes as standard on most examples, the lane-keeping and adaptive cruise work reliably, and the charging management lets you set departure times to pre-condition the cabin. Thoughtful, useful stuff.
Driving
Quick enough to surprise you. Smooth enough to relax you.
The combined output gives you brisk, confident progress in a way that feels effortless rather than frantic. In town the motor handles most of the work silently, and the transition to the petrol engine is smooth enough that passengers rarely notice it happen. The ride is well-sorted for a car of this size, the steering is precise, and at motorway speeds the refinement is closer to executive class than small SUV.
Running
Charge it overnight. Forget petrol for the week.
If your daily drive is under thirty miles and you can charge at home, you will barely visit a petrol station. Servicing falls under BMW's flexible intervals and an independent specialist comfortable with plug-in hybrids will look after it well. Insurance sits in a reasonable group for its class. The battery warranty coverage on these cars is solid, and real-world experience from owners has been encouraging in terms of reliability.
Verdict
Check the charging history and both battery health figures.
Worth a quick check before you buy: confirm the high-voltage battery health and look at whether the car has actually been plugged in regularly. Beyond that, this is a straightforward recommendation. You get BMW build quality, genuine hybrid economy, a composed drive, and a cabin you will enjoy every day. If you want a compact SUV that works as hard as you do, the X1 xDrive25e is the one to have.
