Rebecca's review — BMW 2 Series 218i M petrol (2022–2024)
Overview
The sweet spot nobody talks about
The 218i M Sport is one of those used buys that just makes sense. You get a proper rear-wheel-drive BMW, a car with genuine character and a badge that holds its head up anywhere, without stretching to something bigger or older than you need. It suits younger drivers, commuters, and anyone who wants something sharp and satisfying every single day without fuss.
Outside
Aggressive enough to turn heads. Subtle enough to keep them.
BMW got the proportions exactly right on this generation. It sits low, it looks wide, and the M Sport kit gives it a purposeful edge without tipping into boy-racer territory. The kidney grille is bold but not absurd. The alloys fill the arches properly. Whether you find one in black, white or one of the metallic greys, it photographs beautifully and it has aged without a wrinkle.
Inside
You sit in this and forget what it cost.
Step inside and the quality feels a cut above. Soft-touch surfaces where your hands land, a driving position that puts everything exactly where you want it, and seats that hold you firmly on a twisty road without punishing you on a long motorway run. The back seats are genuinely usable for two adults, and the boot handles weekly shopping, a pushchair, or a weekend away without complaint.
Tech
iDrive is still the benchmark. Others are still catching up.
The infotainment system is crisp, logical, and genuinely pleasant to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless on most examples, the digital instrument cluster is clear at a glance, and the parking sensors do their job without drama. Lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking come as standard too, so the car is looking after you on motorways without you having to think about it.
Driving
Rear-wheel drive changes everything.
That rear-wheel-drive layout gives the 218i a liveliness that front-wheel-drive rivals simply cannot match. The 136 horsepower petrol pulls cleanly from low revs, the eight-speed automatic is quick and unobtrusive, and the steering has real weight and feel. Ride comfort in Sport mode is firm but never harsh, and at motorway speeds it settles into a composed, refined cruise that makes long journeys genuinely enjoyable.
Running
You will not wince at the fuel pump.
The 218i is the most economical engine in the range and real-world figures in the mid-forties per gallon are realistic. Servicing through BMW's fixed-price plans keeps costs predictable, and the build quality means you are not chasing minor niggles the way you might with some rivals. Insurance groups are reasonable for the class, and residuals on the M Sport trim stay strong, which matters when you eventually sell.
Verdict
Check the service history and the tyre wear. That's it.
Check the service stamps and give the tyres a look, and you are done. After that, this is a straightforward, rewarding used buy. Rear-wheel drive, a polished interior, genuinely useful technology, and running costs that will not surprise you. If you want a small car that makes you feel something every time you drive it, the 218i M Sport is the one to have.
