Rebecca's review — BMW 2 Series M235i Xdrive petrol (2019–2021)
Overview
306 horsepower for the price of a boring hatchback
The M235i Gran Coupe is one of those used buys that just makes sense. You get a proper turbocharged six-cylinder engine, BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive, and a genuinely premium badge, all at a price that would barely get you into a new mid-range family car. It is aimed squarely at anyone who wants real performance but still needs to park it outside a supermarket without wincing.
Outside
It still turns heads. That's not nothing after seven years.
BMW got the proportions right on this one. The long bonnet, the wide rear haunches, and those M Sport bumpers give it a road presence that genuinely holds up today. The quad exhausts are subtle but you notice them. Darker colours like Black Sapphire and Mineral Grey suit it brilliantly, and the M-spec alloys fill the arches exactly as they should.
Inside
You sit in it and immediately feel the money.
The cabin is a lovely place to spend time. You get soft-touch surfaces where your hands land, supportive sports seats that hold you on a twisty road without crushing you on a long one, and a driving position BMW simply does better than most. Boot space is genuinely practical for a car this size, and the rear passenger room surprises people every single time.
Tech
The sat-nav still works. The interface still makes sense.
You get BMW's iDrive system with a crisp touchscreen, and it remains one of the more intuitive setups from this era. The digital driver display is clear, the stereo is genuinely good, and the driver assistance suite covers lane keeping, adaptive cruise, and automatic emergency braking. Wireless Apple CarPlay is available on these and it works without drama, every day.
Driving
That straight-six spins to seven thousand and never apologises.
This is where the M235i really earns your money. The turbocharged straight-six pulls hard from low revs and then keeps going with a sound that reminds you why cylinders matter. The eight-speed automatic changes quickly and smoothly. Ride comfort is well-judged, firm enough to feel alert without battering you on a motorway run, and the xDrive gives you real confidence in the wet.
Running
Real-world fuel economy that won't embarrass you.
A relaxed motorway run will see you into the high thirties for fuel economy, which is respectable for what this engine is. Insurance falls into a sensible group for an enthusiast car, and BMW's approved servicing network is widespread. Parts availability is strong, the engines in this generation are well proven, and a good independent BMW specialist will keep costs very manageable indeed.
Verdict
Check the service history, the tyres, and the iDrive version.
One quick check on history stamps, remaining tyre depth, and which iDrive software version you are getting, and then you can buy with real confidence. The M235i xDrive is that rare used car that delivers on every front — performance, refinement, practicality, and badge cachet — without asking you to compromise anywhere that matters. If you want a car that makes every journey feel worthwhile, this is the one to have.
