Rebecca's review — BMW 1 Series 118i M petrol (2022–2024)
Overview
Front-wheel drive from BMW. Yes, really.
The 118i M Sport sits right at that sweet spot where you get a proper BMW badge, genuinely grown-up engineering, and a car that costs far less on the used market than it deserves to. It suits anyone who wants something sharp and premium for daily driving without the running costs of a six-cylinder. Young professionals, downsizers, commuters — this one works hard for all of them.
Outside
Bigger kidneys. Bolder stance. It works.
BMW sharpened up the styling on this generation and the 1 Series is all the better for it. The M Sport trim brings a lower front splitter, side skirts, and a tidier rear diffuser that give it genuine presence on the road. The proportions are compact without looking cramped, and most colours — especially the darker metallics — have aged very well indeed. It still turns heads.
Inside
You'll forget this isn't a 3 Series inside
BMW put real effort into this cabin. The materials are soft where they count, the driving position is spot on, and the M Sport seats hold you firmly without being uncomfortable on a long run. The boot is genuinely practical for a car this size. Rear headroom is better than you might expect because the roofline was redesigned. It feels expensive in a way that smaller rivals simply do not.
Tech
This screen system is still class-leading
The iDrive infotainment on this car is one of the best in the business, and it holds up brilliantly even now. The central display is crisp and responsive, the menus are logical, and wireless smartphone mirroring means no faffing with cables the moment you get in. Parking cameras, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control all come across well on this trim level and are genuinely useful every single day.
Driving
Three cylinders that feel like they belong
The 1.5 litre three-cylinder turbo is punchier than the numbers suggest, and the seven-speed automatic gearbox picks the right ratio almost every time. Around town it is effortless. On a good road it rewards you. The suspension on the M Sport strikes a balance that is firm enough to feel planted but never uncomfortable on a longer journey. Wind and road noise are well suppressed. It is a genuinely refined machine.
Running
Real-world mpg in the high forties. Regularly.
The 118i is one of the more sensible choices in this class to actually live with. Fuel economy is strong for a petrol, insurance groups are reasonable for what it is, and BMW's fixed-price servicing packages mean there are no nasty surprises at the garage. Parts availability is excellent and the car holds its value better than most of its direct competitors. It is a premium car that does not penalise you for owning it.
Verdict
Check the service history and tyre wear first
Give the service history and front tyre wear a quick look before you commit — that is genuinely all you need to worry about. Beyond that, this is a seriously impressive used buy. It drives well, looks right, feels premium, and costs less to run than you would imagine. If you want a car that makes every journey feel like it mattered, and you want that BMW quality without the BMW price tag, this is the one to have.
