Rebecca's review — BMW X1 Xdrive 20d diesel (2016–2018)

Overview
Premium SUV money. Hatchback running costs.
The BMW X1 xDrive 20d is one of those used buys that just makes sense. You get a proper all-wheel-drive BMW, a punchy diesel engine, and that badge on the nose, all for a fraction of what it cost new. It suits young families, commuters, and anyone who wants something that feels genuinely premium without the premium price tag hanging over them every month.
Outside
Still looks new. It's nearly a decade old.
BMW got the proportions exactly right on this generation. The squared-off wheel arches give it a planted, purposeful stance, and the front end still looks contemporary today. Spec it with the larger alloys and the right colour — Mineral White or Mediterranean Blue age especially well — and people genuinely cannot tell this car is as old as it is. It has held its shape beautifully.
Inside
You'll forget this isn't a brand new car.
Climb inside and the quality is immediately reassuring. Soft-touch surfaces, solid switchgear, and a driving position that BMW just gets right every single time. Rear passengers have a surprising amount of knee room for a car this size, and the boot is genuinely practical — 505 litres with the seats up. Fold them down and you have van-like space. It is a proper family car in here.
Tech
iDrive is still better than most rivals today.
The iDrive infotainment system on this generation holds up remarkably well. The rotary controller is fast and intuitive, and higher specs bring navigation, DAB, and Bluetooth as standard. Parking sensors, a reversing camera, and adaptive cruise control are all on the options list and genuinely useful every single day. The driver display is clear and uncluttered, which is more than you can say for plenty of newer rivals.
Driving
200 horsepower. Feels every bit of it.
The two-litre diesel is the engine to have. It pulls hard from low revs, the eight-speed automatic gearbox is smooth and quick-thinking, and the xDrive system inspires real confidence in the wet. Refinement on a motorway run is impressive — wind and road noise are well suppressed for a car of this size. It rides firmly but never harshly, and it steers with more feel than you might expect from an SUV.
Running
50 miles per gallon from a fast SUV.
The 20d returns real-world fuel economy in the high forties, which is genuinely impressive for an all-wheel-drive car that moves this quickly. Insurance sits comfortably in the middle groups, and the BMW dealer network is extensive, with independent specialists now very familiar with this generation. Consumables — brakes, tyres, filters — are all reasonable. This is a car that does not punish you for owning it.
Verdict
One check. One test drive. Then buy it.
Worth giving the injectors and AdBlue system a quick look, and check the service history is complete — one sentence, done. Everything else about this car works in your favour. You get BMW build quality, real all-weather capability, a boot that works, and an engine that is both fast and frugal. If you want a used premium SUV that earns its keep every single day, the X1 xDrive 20d is the one.
